Fairway Substation, Yealm

Background

Yealm Community Energy (YCE) is a well-established member-owned community group serving the Yealm area. The aim of the group is to bring local renewable energy installations such as solar farms into community ownership, then use the profits to fund local environmental projects. YCE owns an existing solar farm at Newton Downs which generates enough clean energy to power the equivalent of 2,000 average homes.

What is the challenge?

YCE aims to get its local community involved and interested in understanding energy usage, promoting renewable generation and raise interest in the group’s new solar farm venture.

What is the proposed solution and how is OpenLV enabling it?

Data from the substation in the community being monitored as part of the OpenLV project will be combined with generation data from YCE’s solar farm, and aggregated domestic monitoring data from household loggers in the community, to help promote a greater understanding of energy generation and consumption in the local area. The aim is to make electricity data more accessible to communities, provoking interest and engagement.

YCE plans to display local electricity data to the community and at events such as the Yealmpton Show, to engage the community and promote use of the app but also to raise awareness of YCE and its new solar development.
